Ready to open: Revamped Pragati Maidan convention centre to be among world’s best – ET Infra

NEW DELHI: The redeveloped ITPO complex or Integrated Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC) at Pragati Maidan, which will host the G20 summit, will be inaugurated on July 26. With this, Delhi will get a world class facility for conventions and exhibitions, which was long overdue for the national capital to be a global hub for hosting grand events.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the convention centre which will be among the top 10 exhibition and convention complexes in the world, rivalling Hannover Exhibition Centre in Germany and National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) in Shanghai.

Till now, Vigyan Bhawan was the only major such centre in Delhi, which was built way back in 1956 and can’t meet future needs considering India’s target to emerge as the world’s third largest economy in the next two decades. Globally, best connected cities with top infrastructure facilities have emerged as the preferred destination for hosting international conventions and exhibitions. With several top class golf courses and hotels available in the city, the modern convention centre will go a long way in making Delhi a destination for global events.

Sources said while designing the IECC, studies were carried out across countries including South Korea, US, Germany and China, which have such facilities.

The IECC at Pragati Maidan is spread across 123 acres and is India’s largest venue for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE), a feature present across all top cities in the world. For India, which wants to increase its share of the global tourism market, MICE is an important segment to tap into and through convention and exhibition centres, such as the revamped Pragati Maidan complex, the government is hoping to cash in on that.

“The magnitude of the IECC’s stature and infrastructure is a testament to India’s capability to host world-class events on a grand scale,” an official said. The complex comprises one mega convention centre divided into four levels, 24 meeting rooms, two auditoriums and another two halls.

The features of the IECC include an amphitheatre with a seating capacity of 3,000, which is equivalent to three PVR theatres combined. This can be used for performances, cultural shows and entertainment events. Moreover, there is a large 7,000 sqm water body with an island performance stage. Musical fountains in the water body with laser shows will be a treat to visitors, officials said.

At Level 3 of the centre, the plenary hall has a seating capacity of 7,000, which makes it larger than the 5,500-seater Sydney Opera House. It has large moveable walls and can also be converted into three separate halls for meetings.

The centre has 4,800 vehicle parking spaces with access through signal-free roads to ensure visitors reach the venue without any hassle. For pedestrians, shaded walkways have been provided.

“The exhibition halls offer seven innovative spaces for showcasing products, innovations and ideas. These state-of-the-art halls provide an ideal platform for exhibitors and companies to engage with their target audience, fostering business growth and networking opportunities,” the official said.

The redevelopment of Pragati Maidan began in 2017 and the initial deadline was 2019. The project is being executed by state-owned National Buildings Construction Corporation.

Meanwhile, another major such facility – India International Convention and Expo Centre (IICC) – is coming up in Dwarka. Sources said the project is likely to be completed in the next three months. With an indoor area of 3 lakh sqm, it will be India’s largest convention and exhibition complex. The upcoming complex is located around 10 km from Delhi international airport, with the surrounding area home to a sports complex, diplomatic residences, a golf course and the airport city hotel.
