Airport shorter route project finally starts in Chandigarh – ET Infra

CHANDIGARH: The long-delayed project — the shorter-route to Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport here — has finally moved from drawing board to implementation stage.

On Monday, a detailed ground survey of the land where the alternative road to airport from Chandigarh is to come up was conducted. The land falls within the UT administration jurisdiction.

The land to be acquired was demarcated by a joint team of engineering and revenue departments for acquisition of land.

“Now, the revenue map will be formulated with the demarcation and the land acquisition notices as per rules will be started to be issued,” said an official.

It was in May this year when the project got final approval from Punjab governor-cum- UT administrator Banwarilal Purohit. In the meeting chaired by the governor, the Punjab government had also given its nod for acquiring the project land falling in its jurisdiction.

The UT is to acquire around 42 acres. The proposed alignment covers 0.82 km of road passing within Punjab boundary for which 14.07-acre land is required to be acquired by Punjab.

“Punjab has also been given maps with alignment and area to be acquired under its jurisdiction,” said the official.

The administration has been deliberating to develop a shorter and alternate route to the airport, as the existing and single route is long and residents have to travel 11.5km to reach the airport from Junction 63. The alternate route has been prepared after consultation of all the stakeholders, Punjab government, ministry of defence, IAF authorities, Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHIAL), ministry of railways.

The working permission of the ministry of defence, central government, has been received for permanent transfer of defence land to the Chandigarh administration measuring 0.982931 acres at airport. The defence authorities have also constituted a board of officers to ascertain the exact area of survey, demarcation of land, modalities before handing over the defence land for commencement of work. The CHIAL has proposed construction of road covering 1.1 km length within their premises at their own level.

Mohali Industrial Association had filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana high court raising various difficulties faced by them. One of the issues raised was the direct approach road for connectivity to the airport to Chandigarh.
