L&T sets up skills training institute in President Murmu’s hometown – ET Infra

Eighteen year old Pushpita Patra dreams of moving out of her home in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, to a city where she can make a living. A tenth class pass, Patra could not study further but has now enrolled into the L&T Skills Training Hub in Pahadpur, Mayurbhanj, Odisha, to learn plumbing.

“I am learning all about pipes. How to measure them? How to join them? How to open them? I want to move out of here, earn a living and support my family,” says Patra, in her first month of training at the institute.

After Patra graduates in three months and is placed by L&T on ground, she will start making Rs 15000 per month. “I am hopeful about the future,” she says. Residents in Patra’s village are mostly daily wagers making Rs 200 per day or Rs 6000 per month.

Like Patra, 74 other girls and over 100 boys are undergoing training in masonry, bar bending, scaffolding, plumbing, pipe welding, and digital skills, at L&T ‘s facility.

On Tuesday, President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the L&T Skill Training Hub at her hometown Pahadpur in Mayurbhanj, Odisha.

L&T, in collaboration with SLS Trust, led by Murmu’s daugher, Itishree Murmu, has established the Skill Training Hub across a land parcel of five acres. The facility was completed in a five-month and aims at providing underprivileged youth in the region with training in construction skills, thus enabling them to become self-reliant.

“SLS Trust, led by its President, has been instrumental in creating opportunities for the marginalised sections of society,” L&T said in a press statement.

Funded by L&T under its corporate social responsibility CSR initiatives, the project will cost around Rs 15 crore, which includes the operational expenses for four years. Thus far the company has spent Rs 7 crore in setting up the facility.

“This training center will enable candidates to fully focus on learning and developing their skills in an enabling environment with a strong focus on life skills and personality development. We believe that empowering the underprivileged youth through accessible skill training is not just an investment for their future but a promise of a brighter and more inclusive tomorrow,” said Meena Subramanyan, President of Prayas Trust, formed by the spouses of L&T construction’s employees.

The project, which includes operations and maintenance, is a significant opportunity for the tribal youth in the area, connecting them with opportunities beyond their immediate surroundings.

The Skill Training Hub is equipped with infrastructure, featuring an administrative-cum-institute building, a multipurpose hall, an e-learning hall, a digital training room, separate hostels for both boys and girls (each accommodating 120 individuals), dining facilities, practice yards for various trades, and a dedicated workshop for learning pipe welding. Additionally, the training center is equipped with state-of-the-art simulators with AR/VR

As per the provisions of an MoU signed with SLS Trust, L&T will establish and run the Skill Training Hub for five years, and after this it will be taken over by SLS Trust. The handing over process will start in the fourth year.

“After the training, these students will be able to earn Rs 14000- 15,000 per month. If they are on an international site, they could earn up to rupees one lakh a month. This however, depends on the how they pick up the skills. Our target is that after three years they should be at least front line supervisors,” said Mable Abraham.
