‘Govt mulling to terminate contract of L&T in B’gavi’ – ET Infra

BELAGAVI: The government is mulling to terminate the contract of 24X7 water project work given to Larsen and Toubro (L&T) company in Belagavi, and call a new tender, said urban development minister Byrathi Suresh here on Friday.

Addressing a joint press conference with municipal administration minister Rahim Khan at Suvarna Vidhana Soudha (SVS) here, he said: “Recently, Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) imposed Rs 21 crore penalty on L&T for delaying the drinking water supply project. The company has been unnecessarily delaying the project here and Kalaburagi. I have personally warned the company management twice, but in vain. In such a case, we must find an alternative.”

The minister further said he has already instructed the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) to issue notice to the company and get its reply. “We will seek advice from the advocate general and legally terminate the contract. There is no problem in BCC recovering the penalty imposed on the company as the government has the deposit money with it,” he explained.

Replying to ad boards and hoardings in the city, the minister said he has ordered the local administration to remove all the commercial hoardings installed at different roads and circles. “There is a court order not to impose tax on ad hoardings. Taking undue advantage of that order, some tender-holders are using the advertising spaces without paying money to the local authority. So, I have asked the local administration to remove all such hoardings,” he said.

To a question on Belagavi Urban Development Authority (Buda) not developing a single new layout in Belagavi over the past decade, Basavaraj said he has instructed the authority to identify a 150acre land at the earliest, and call a tender for the same within a month of two.

As far as pending Kanabargi Layout is concerned, he said the work will start within 45 days. He said the project was delayed because of legal issues.

MLAs Asif Sait, Mahendra Tammannavar, and Vishwanath Vaidya were present.
