CHENNAI: Metrowater managing director, R Kirlosh Kumar, inspected the underground sewer work in Mugalivakkam and Manapakkam on Thursday morning after TOI’s report on Wednesday. “We will speed up the sewer work in Mugalivakkam Main Road. We have handed over 850m out of 2.3 km now. We have asked the contractor to increase manpower and machines,” said the managing director. “By September 7, we will hand over the road to the Highways.”
In Manapakkam, sewer house connections will be given within 15 days and the water supply work will be completed by September third week, according to Metrowater. 500 more houses must get water connections in Manapakkam.
Highways executive engineer Dhanaseelan said that work on Mugalivakkam main road has begun on Thursday night and Manapakkam Main Road will be laid by the third week of September.
Residents said that the authorities had given multiple deadlines earlier and wanted Metrowater, Highways and GCC to work faster in making the roads conducive before northeast monsoon. “Navigating on the roads becomes worse during rains,” said Rajesh Bakthavatsalam, a Mugalivakkam resident.
Even though residents are relieved that no new work would begin now, they have few demands. “Highways must finish laying Manapakkam main road soon. Metrowater must not dig up the Manapakkam-Mugalivakkam Main road for sewer work until January 2024,” said Rajesh.
Sabari Nagar resident Balaji said that they should finish laying Sabari Nagar 2nd main road which is the major road that residents of the area use.
“We are waiting for GCC to give permission for working on Sabari Nagar 2nd main road since they want to finish laying all the other interior roads,” said Kirlosh.
